It is an opportunity for us to reflect on the language and ideas that represented each year. So, take a stroll down memory lane to remember all of our past Word of the Year selections. Change It wasn’t trendy , funny, nor was it coined on Twitter , but we thought change told a real story about how our users defined Unlike in , change was no longer a campaign slogan. British Leyland In , Rover combined its skill in producing comfortable saloons and the rugged Land Rover 4×4 to produce the Range Rover , one of the first vehicles preceded by the Jeep Wagoneer and IH Scout to combine off-road ability and comfortable versatility. Powered by the licence-built ex- Buick V8 engine, it had innovative features such as a permanent four-wheel drive system, all- coil spring suspension, and disc brakes on all wheels.
The company’s other major project at this time was the P8, a successor, styled by David Bache , for the 3-litre. The manufacturer was nevertheless short of cash and focus at this time: Production capacity had been set aside for the P8 at the Solihull plant. Michael Edwardes was brought in to head the company. The Rover SD1 of was an excellent car,[ citation needed ] but was beset with so many build quality and reliability issues it never delivered on its great promise.
Following the closure of the Triumph factory at Canley , production of the TR7 and TR8 was moved to Solihull; soon after, a savage programme of cutbacks in the late s led to the end of car production at Solihull, which was turned over for Land Rover production only. All future Rover cars would be made in the former Austin and Morris plants in Longbridge and Cowley, respectively. The deal was thought to be mutually beneficial:

A Marque of Distinction From the very beginning right through to this day, Hetchins have turned the necessity for lugs — and for the breaking up of straight lines — into an art form. Hugh O’Neill traces the history of this famous make of lightweight. How crazy they are in America is open to question. It is the living room of a typical American suburban, middle class home. The furniture is modern. There is an abstract painting over the dining recess and in a huge picture frame over the fireplace is a bicycle frame.
On the other side of the continent in Seattle, there is a flourishing Hetchins Appreciation Society. Each year the Hetchins population of the States increases by at least 50 machines.
In these cases examination of the frame number — where it is, what it is, and how it is, may be of some assistance at least in allowing other specialists to hazard a guess at the true origin of the frame or machine. These publications have been invaluable in adding accuracy to the information — but even including their data there are still well over makes of possible lightweights to be confused over!
The author would be grateful to know of any inaccuracies and to receive further information to make the tables more comprehensive. For example, some BSA frames have BSA and a 3 or 4 figure number cast into the base of the BB, this is just the casting number or perhaps a model number — it is not the frame number.
Servicing English 3-speeds any younger mechanics are unfamiliar with some of the idiosyncrasies of English-made 3-speed bikes. Nevertheless, there are an awful lot of them still on the road, because they were built to last, and they still come in for repair.
Replica made from the alleged Caprotti sketch. There are several early, but unverified claims for the invention of the bicycle. The earliest claim is that the bicycle was first made by the hand of Chinese inventor Lu Ban . Another later report, in the form of a sketch, comes from and attributed to Gian Giacomo Caprotti , a pupil of Leonardo da Vinci. In Hans-Erhard Lessing described this as a purposeful fraud.
Augusto Marinoni, a lexicographer and philologist, who was entrusted by the Commissione Vinciana of Rome with the transcription of Leonardo’s Codex Atlanticus. Drais invented his Laufmaschine German for “running machine” in , that was called Draisine English or draisienne French by the press. Karl von Drais patented this design in , which was the first commercially successful two-wheeled, steerable, human-propelled machine, commonly called a velocipede , and nicknamed hobby-horse or dandy horse.
Hans-Erhard Lessing Drais’ biographer found from circumstantial evidence that Drais’ interest in finding an alternative to the horse was the starvation and death of horses caused by crop failure in , the Year Without a Summer following the volcanic eruption of Tambora in This design was welcomed by mechanically minded men daring to balance, and several thousand copies were built and used, primarily in Western Europe and in North America. Its popularity rapidly faded when, partly due to increasing numbers of accidents, some city authorities began to prohibit its use.
However, in Paris a Chinese visitor named Bin Chun could still observe foot-pushed velocipedes. The concept was picked up by a number of British cartwrights; the most notable was Denis Johnson of London announcing in late that he would sell an improved model.

This early type of bicycle had its wheels side-by-side, instead of one wheel behind the other as later became the standard. When the designer, Edward Carl Fredrich Otto , was negotiating with BSA for the manufacture of the “Otto,” being anxious to prove that his machine was correct in design and principle, he demonstrated his invention to the Directors by mounting the machine on the large table, riding it backwards and forwards, showing the method of balancing, and explaining the details of the somewhat complicated system of steering.
He then mounted the machine in the Board Room, rode it down the stairs, and so out into the roadway.

The company history began more than one hundred years before then, in a time and in a Europe that would be wholly alien to those of us brought up over the recent generations. To be concise, the origin was some decades before then in when Josef Werndl b. He improved manufacturing techniques and diversified their offerings.
They would continue the manufacturing but also develop the Werndl-rifle Model , a new modern breech loading rifle system. There are three ways to upgrade a Nottingham Raleigh to use modern cotterless cranks: New Spindle, Old Cups By far the cheapest option is to keep the original 26 TPI Raleigh cups, and install a new spindle with the tapered square ends needed to fit cotterless cranks. Bicycle shops do not usually stock these sizes, but Internet vendors carry them. You must check the fit of bottom-bracket spindle, bearing balls and cups before installing the bottom bracket.
If the bearing tracks run too low on the spindle, the bearings will wear quickly. Place some grease in the bearing cup, then assemble the parts, as shown in the photo below. Rotate the spindle, then take it out and examine it. The next image shows the bearing track too low, as is usual with a JIS spindle and Raleigh cups. The bearing balls actually ride on the little ledge on the low side of the bearing area of the spindle.

Contact The History of the Folding Bike There have been many who have laid claim to the invention of the folding bike. Humorously, a bike manufacturer who shall remain nameless so as to not unduly embarrass them audaciously claims on their website to have produced the world’s first folding bike in Wishful thinking by their marketing department I suppose. The truth is that the folding bike has been around for considerably longer than one might imagine and most claims of being the first are erroneous.
First things first though, you can’t have a folding bike without the invention of the bicycle itself. So a very short history lesson on the bicycle is in order. Here again we have some disputed claims of invention and historians will probably never be able to identify the exact moment of invention.
