Sneak Preview Opens April 5, Ancient Egyptians believed death marked the beginning of a journey to eternal life. A successful passage—the hope of every Egyptian—required that the mummified body be placed in a well-equipped tomb, decorated with prayers and images to guide the deceased on the difficult path ahead. If all went well, the deceased would become a spirit in the Green Fields of eternity, while the soul joined the gods as a star in the sky and the mummy lived on in the tomb forever.

First published 31 October Date Last Updated: Dusty spider webs are associated with Halloween and creepy houses, but many are beautiful or architecturally accomplished. Did you know that you can tell what kind of spider is lurking by the threads it spins? A web isn’t a foolproof way of identifying the spider that made it, but its shape will usually allow you to establish which family it comes from, and it’s often possible to be even more specific.

Here we outline the main web structures that UK spiders use to catch their prey and the common architects of each kind. A dew-covered spider web in autumn Courtesy of Pixabay CC0 A spider web frozen solid in winter Courtesy of pxhere CC0 Spiders build webs all year round, but autumn is the best time to spot them outdoors. Morning dew and mist droplets suddenly reveal a multitude of hidden webs that were previously virtually invisible thanks to the transparent nature of silk.

Autumn is often thought of as spider season for this reason, and because spiders tend to be fully grown at this time of year and searching for a mate, making it more likely we’ll see them. Frosty spider webs also make a stunning sight. To get a better look at webs when they’re not covered in dew or frost, you can spray a fine mist of water to make their fine details stand out. This won’t harm the spider or damage the web – just make sure you use a clean spray bottle with no traces of chemicals.

By definition, a consolidant is a resin which has been dissolved in a solvent. Common solvents are water, acetone, alcohol, and toluene. Consolidants are generally available in two forms: Pure resins consolidants are resins which have been dissolved in a solvent, such as Butvar polyvinyl butyral granules dissolved in acetone. Consolidants dissolved in acetone should only be used on dry specimens, since even a small amount of moisture in the specimen can react adversely with the consolidant destroying its desired properties.

Museums in the U. Chief among these are polyvinyl butyral Butvar , a thermoplastic resin, and Acryloid B , an acrylic resin. PVA polyvinyl acetate , used as a pure resin is still available, but most users have switched to Acryloid B , which is harder, more durable, and exhibits less flexibility. Pure resins are mixed with their solvents to form a very thin, watery solution which is then applied to the specimen or the specimen is immersed in the solution.

Thin and watery should be stressed. The idea is to get the resin where it’s needed, and in order to penetrate the specimen’s surface and carry resin down into the interior of the fossil bone, the consolidant must be thin or else it will be deposited on the surface of the bone only, like shellac or varnish used in the past. Those treatments may have protected the surface, but did little to strengthen the whole bone. The second class of consolidants, the emulsions are mainly used to treat wet or moist specimens.

Emulsions are suspensions, in water, of a resin and solvent solution, and like Elmer’s Glue, a popular polyvinyl acetate emulsion, are generally white, milky mixtures.
